Dissertation Guidelines

Warning on plagiarism

There seems to be an increase in the number of reported cases of plagiarism, especially, but not exclusively, from Internet sources.  This has happened at all levels and in all types of submitted work.

You are reminded of the definition of the term plagiarism according to the Regulations Governing Conduct at Examinations, 1997: “the unacknowledged use, as one’s own, of work of another person, whether or not such work has been published”.  Your attention is also drawn to the document Guidelines on Plagiarism, jointly approved by the Faculties of Science and Information and Communications Technology in June 2007 (available here).

It is now mandatory that every single piece of course work submitted for marking is accompanied by a declaration that all the work is one’s own, except where acknowledged.  The guidelines also state that where such a declaration is required work shall not be marked, and shall receive a mark of 0, if the declaration is missing or incomplete.

Therefore, with immediate effect all students taking physics study units requiring the submission of course work, including laboratory reports, are required to submit a duly filled paper copy of the standard declaration form (available here) along with every piece of submitted work and also to submit a “soft” version in machine readable form, which will be retained by the Department for future reference.
