Medical Applications of Microwaves
- This is a fairly new activity started late 1996.
- Motivated by links with Bath University’s
Microwave Medical Devices Group leader
(Prof. N J Cronin) and Microsulis plc
- We were responsible for introducing the first
Microwave Endometrial Ablation (MEA)
system outside the UK.
- Currently provide technical support for
running this system in a private hospital
- Other project in the pipeline: Treatment of
viral warts by application of low-power
microwave energy. This project is in
collaboration with the Bath Group and
Microsulis. Field trials should start in Malta
early 2000.
An MEA (Microwave Endometrial Ablation) unit installed in a private
clinic in Malta. The inset shows the applicator. This system was designed
at Bath University, chiefly by N.J.Cronin and I.Feldberg and commercialised by
Microsulis plc

MEA offers currently the most effective non-invasive alternaternative
to hysterectomy for the treatment of Menorrhagia.
The endometrium is ablated by microwave energy delivered
by means of a special applicator inserted in the vagina.
